This image was taken on my second trip to Capitol Reef National Park, where one of my deepest inspirations, Minor White, had photographed during the 1960’s. He, too, had photographed in Cohab Canyon (named because Mormons who were married to several wives, then illegal, would hide out here when law enforcement came to visit). It required, though, a steady cl;imb up the side of the cliff on a switchback trail. This wonderful shape, which I think of as a Japanese ensō, is composed of a welded volcanic ash known as tuff. I used my 6x9 Linhof back to get this shot on the Sinar F2 4x5; the film is Fujichrome Velvia 50. The colors are remarkable, but not surprising in that Utah country where so much of the landscape is vibrant and dense with color.
