North of Madison is the historic Eleutherian College, built in 1854 near the town of Lancaster, which was then home to the Neil’s Creek Anti-Slavery Society. The school, which also doubles as a chapel, taught children who were black and white. I found it quite by accident in April, 2024 when my daughter and I drove north of Madison to find a place to watch the solar eclipse (Louisville was not fully in the shadow). I’d spotted a small church on a map, but as we drove to it, we saw the crowd in the field of this building. We decided to pause there, which was the right decision. I went back later to make several photographs; given its age and history, I knew the lith printing technique would lend the image a mood befitting its age.
