I am a fan of abstract photography. Minor White, Brett Weston, and Aaron Siskind were likely hovering in my subconscious when I came upon the most seemingly mundane thing on earth: a bit of ice on the sidewalk at the Crescent Hill Reservoir Park. I immediately pointed my camera, the Pentax 6x7, straight down at the ice and got this shot while the sun was available. It always seems figurative to me. It is, like several of my photographs, very difficult to print; however, using the contrast masking kit I’d gotten from Lynn Radeka, I managed to get all the parts of it onto the print—all the detail from the brightest and darkest sections. Most photographers in town will go to this park and photograph the obvious: the 1879 stone Gatehouse building mostly (and I confess I’ve photographed it too), especially because it sits out in the water of the reservoir. This seems to me the kind of image I should always hold in mind: that sometimes even the simplest thing beneath our feet, easy to overlook, might turn out to be one of our achievements.
