When I first visited Carter Caves State Resort Park—one of my favorite places in Kentucky’s Appalachian Mountains—one of the first hikes I did was on the Box Canyon Trail in the Cascade Caverns Nature Preserve. At a turn in the trail, just past the Cascade Bridge, a natural arch, I found this amazing sandstone cliff face eroded into what’s known as honeycomb weathering; “stonelace” is a lovely name for it. The holes themselves are called “tafoni.” It’s a simple shot, mostly repeated patterns, but when I’d printed it on Ilford Warmtone paper, it just captured the feel of it. And there was enough variation in tones to make it interesting to me. Now, whenever I’ve walked by this spot I always pause—even in deep snow. One time, photographing here, I accidentally dropped one of my pieces—the Sinar reflex goggles—and they went tumbling down the steep slope. I did get them back with a bit of scrambling.
