In June 2024, having finished my first year teaching at North Oldham High School, I began driving the region around Bardstown, Kentucky, in the bourbon country. What I discovered was a proliferation of old Catholic churches, some dating to the early 19th century. One that I had been to before was the St. Rose Priory, sitting on a hill above the Loretto Road, not far from Cartwright Creek. It’s home to Dominican Friars. I circled the church, thinking about Minor White, whose journals, the Memorable Fancies, I’d been reading (it was published in late 2024 by Princeton, and I was writing about it for Black + White Photography in England). White was extremely interested in the space where spirituality met photography, and so I had that in mind. This abstraction met me outside the church, and I knew I could make something of it. It is one of my recent favorites. The universal circle symbol, to me, is what I wanted to emphasize.
